Session 5: The Gorgeous Temple: Hinduism Culture in Malaysia

Seminar Introduction:

This seminar will introduce the book to readers at Southern University College and facilitate discussions with the audience. It aims to present a brief history of Indians in Malaya/Malaysia, an introduction to Hinduism, insights into understanding Hindu temples, and the promotion of inter-ethnic communication and mutual appreciation.

Speaker Info:

Tang Ah Chai (CEO of the Yuansheng Foundation, Veteran Historian and Cultural Researcher)

Tang Ah Chai is a seasoned local historian and cultural researcher. In his early career, he worked with the United Chinese School Teachers’ Association of Malaysia (Jiao Zong) and the United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong) for many years, serving on the editorial and review committee for independent school textbooks. He later joined the Chinese Resource Research Centre, where he held positions including Deputy Research Director, Acting Director, and Director over a decade of service. He also assisted in editing and publishing the Research and Resources Quarterly Journal for many years. From 1998 to 2000, he served as the Youth Chairman of the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall. Currently, he is the CEO of the Yuansheng Foundation and frequently transitions between roles as a historian, commentator, and writer.

讲座简介：

本地资深文史工作者陈亚才最新著作《瑰丽的万神庙：马来西亚印度教与印度庙文集》正式出版，该书汇集了43篇涵盖印度教的宗教历史、庙宇建筑与民俗文化的文章，为读者提供他对这一古老信仰的深刻洞察，是马来西亚少见的中文印度教研究作品。陈亚才倾注10年心血，深入田野调查、怀抱人文关怀和扩大文化视野，用心呈现的一本跨文化著作，内容涵盖印度教的宗教、经典、建筑、民俗和历史，是我国第一本以中文书写马来西亚印度教与印度庙的专书。本场讲座将着重介绍马来亚/马来西亚印裔简史、认识印度教，看懂印度庙，并向南方读者推介新作，促进跨族群间的沟通和相互欣赏。

主讲嘉宾：陈亚才（元生基金会执行长、资深文史工作者）

陈亚才，一九六一年出生于霹雳，成长于柔佛。早年在新山宽柔中学念书，中学毕业后赴台深造，进入台湾国立大学历史系，一九八三年曾获台湾国立大学优秀青年奖。一九八五年毕业，考获文学士学位。回国后加入马来西亚华校教师会总会（教总）和马来西亚华校董事联合会总会（董总）工作多年并担任董总独立中学课本编审委员。后在华社资料研究中心服务。曾任副研究主任，署理主任及代主任等职。在华社资料研究中心服务达十年。曾协助编辑及出版《资料与研究》季刊多年。一九九八年至二零零零年担任雪兰莪中华大会堂青年团团长。现任元生基金会执行长，并经常切换于文史研究者、社区导览员、时评人和作家等身份之间。
