To celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China, Southern University College’s Student Society of Journalist & Communication Studies, collaborated with the Fuzhou Municipal People’s Government Information Office and the Chinese Film Association of Malaysia, successfully hosted Fujian Film Festival @ Johor Bahru on the evening of 23 October 2024, in 4A Auditorium. This event aimed to foster cultural exchange between Malaysia and China, deepening young people’s understanding and appreciation of traditional Chinese culture through films.
The festival featured two celebrated films: ‘Ping Pong: The Triumph’, an inspiring story about the Chinese national ping pong team’s journey to success, and ‘Havoc in Heaven’, an award-winning Beijing opera film. After the show, Cheng Lu, the director of Havoc in Heaven shared insights into the film’s creative vision, the unique characteristics of Beijing opera, and its cultural heritage. He vividly described the innovative fusion of traditional Beijing opera with modern movie, giving students a deeper understanding of the art form’s distinctive appeal.
This cultural exchange provided attendees with a rich visual experience while encouraging cross-cultural dialogue. It sparked students’ interest in traditional Chinese culture and expanded their understanding of Beijing opera’s artistic significance. Southern University College remains committed to promoting and preserving Chinese cultural heritage, offering students further opportunities to explore and experience traditional arts, and strengthening Malaysia-China friendship through cultural exchange and diversity.
